He suggested I write about my mother. That would be a biography. I kind of like that idea but I will have to do some research. She had fourteen children, of whom I came last and am now the only one alive. I spent my first 14 years with my parents, then moved to Spokane with my sister. Four of the 14 kids died young, and one was killed by a train at age seven. Mom died at 70 and I am now 80. I wonder if I should make the trip from Elko, Nevada to Springfield, Missouri and Joplin to try to find out more about her family. I want to feel how she felt when she lost those children, as well as the pride she felt over her living children. Next July her descendants plan a reunion in the Seattle area. I’d like to have this story complete by then. We’ll be celebrating the 100th anniversary of my parents’ wedding. He was 36 and she was 18.
All I have done so far is write from my journal notes of conversations often by phone with my brothers and sisters. They seemed to remember more of the past than I do.
I love Hemingway’s writing and currently am enjoying “Brideshead Revisited” by Evelyn Waugh.
