Today, we are going to kickoff a new weekly series called, Learn to Write. Learn to Write is going to be a review of some of what we think are some of the best resources where knowledge about creative writing can be gained, both offline and online.
In our travels around the web and the ‘real’ world, we run across learning resources that cover a wide spectrum, from a top university such as University of Redlands to a simple web site, Squidoo Lens Reviews, which is staffed by writers reviewing writers.
As the reviews roll out from week to week, we will be placing resource links at the bottom of each post, and when the series is finished, we will create a page that is nothing but summaries of all resources that we reviewed.
The whole idea behind the series is to help arm you, as well as ourselves, with a resource rich reference library that will help expand our knowledge of this wonderful craft.
Let’s drop any further fuss and get on with the first review…
University of Redlands
Knowing now about how much I love to write and how much I struggle to make it all to work, I regret not attempting to get a bachelors degree in creative writing.
If I were to earnestly seek continued education in this field, I’d have to say that Redlands’ School of Arts and Sciences would be one of my top choices, for many reasons.
Not the least being the setting. Come on, who wouldn’t want to attend a comfortable Southern California university that snuggles the bosom of the awe inspiring Sierra Nevada mountains?
Oh, there’s more.
In 2009, Forbes magazine released their list of the top universities in America. This list was compiled solely on the strength of student experiences and the Redlands California school ranked 195 on that list of America’s best colleges.
Tuition for undergrads is less than 50 grand a year (including room, board, AND books), and the prof to student ratio rides right around 1 to 10.
Pretty comfy I’d say.
But, I know you are asking, ‘But…’
The path to the Creative Writing undergraduate degree at Redlands University looks perfectly in line with what I believe about this craft. Focusing on the creative process rather than specific genres, the staff of accomplished authors and poets is opening students’ minds to the entire writing process.
The degree program is laden with writing workshops and seminars featuring noted authors as speakers, allowing the students to learn writing from a writer’s view.
We all want to be writers, but sometimes fear the creativity process and what spooky things our mind plays with. But this is how creativity attacks us, and we should embrace that. If we learn to nurture our creativity, then we can write anything, anywhere we want.
I personally believe that schools such as this foster this on many different levels.
Yes, if I was coming out of High School and knew I was ready to dedicate my life to creative writing, University of Redlands would be among the finalists on my list.
Join us every Sunday as we review a different writing resource in the series, Learn to Write.
