She was out of the cab and back under the truck in moments.
He ducked under the trailer and made his way back under the cab.
“You are crazy lady!”
Then she held up two semi automatic pistols.
“ I don’t know about you, but I really wasn’t planning on dying today!”

Through the spray of bullets, she felt what she was looking for.
“Got it!” she exclaimed.
Jake knew if he didn’t do something, she would never make it out alive.
He began running wildly down the side of the trailer, to draw their fire.
They were gunning for him anyway, not her.

The phone was still ringing as she crawled under the truck.
“I have to go in on this side,” she said.
“That call couldn’t be THAT important.”
She rolled her eyes and let out a sigh.
“If they land we are screwed!”
Then she was moving.
Catching the movement, the chopper began the barrage again.

The heat was rising in waves from the desert sand now.
He stopped for a moment to look at the mountains to his right. They, didn’t even show signs of life.
Suddenly the air exploded with the sounds of a helicopter and gunfire.
“Who the hell is that, and why are they shooting at me?”

Jake bent down picked up his jacket, and put it on. He let out a long sigh, thinking of the hot miserable day ahead.
He knew he could make a call, and be on a plane home in a matter of hours.
He started to walk.
Within two hours, he was wondering why he didn’t.

Panic instantly filled his body.
His heart raced, his mind a whirlwind and his muscles rigid, ready for the confrontation.
Accessing the situation in a matter of seconds, he realized there was no threat.
Slumping back to the ground, he reminded himself, “They are gone. I watched them die.
It’s over, and I’m going home.”

Jake took off his jacket and folded it into a pillow, as he had done so many times before.
Laying down, he was thankful for the somewhat cooler temperature of the concrete tunnel.
It wasn’t long before exhaustion overtook him and he drifted off to sleep.
His dreams filled with visions of actually going home.

As the clouds drifted over the face of the moon, he walked. Even in darkness, the heat rose from the desert sand.
His thoughts were clouded from fatigue, and his body was weak from hours of walking in the scorching heat.
He found shelter in a small underpass. He ducked his head, and sat down.
