This part four in Kim Horton’s series of 55 word fiction pieces, The Long Road Home.

Panic instantly filled his body.

His heart raced, his mind a whirlwind and his muscles rigid, ready for the confrontation.

Accessing the situation in a matter of seconds, he realized there was no threat.

Slumping back to the ground, he reminded himself, “They are gone. I watched them die.

It’s over, and I’m going home.”
