The family had moved back to town.
The scuttlebutt: Fourteen-year-old Teresa had gone to have a baby.
…Teresa pushed a baby carriage down the sidewalk as the fake-smiling Kyla Jean approached.
“Aww! Can I see?”
Teresa only shrugged.
Kyla Jean greedily pulled at a blanket and uncovered the happy, goofy face of Teresa’s dog, Mikey.

That’s a gotcha! Wonderful, it says it all.

Rumors, gossip, and half-truths are almost always spread by those that are ‘holier-than-thou’; those who have real skeletons they try to hide.
The story is great, and the image takes it well beyond the scant 55 words.
Great job, Mimi! I can just see Kyla Jean stomping away as Teresa laughs her head off! Those small town gossips need a good “gotcha” every once in a while.
Squashing a gossip in her tracks is more than precious to watch, even ‘funner’ to savor for later! Loved this 55 words.

Thank y’all! And thank you for adding this to the contest Alex.
Aha!! Isn’t is wretched that folks will gobble and gab a nasty lie yet forget to mention a humble truth? I guess that’s why The Enquirer outsells National Geographic, and the Jersey Shore is at the top of the ratings.
Such a great examination of human nature in a mere 55 words- fantastic!!!
