Seven Up
Six Up
Five Up
Four Up
One Two Three Up
Two Up
One Up
The little girl repeated her mantra, sometimes aloud, sometimes in her head, as the rubber ball bounced off the cement wall of the school. It was quiet, being a Saturday and school out for the weekend. She lived across the street from this place of higher learning and played many games with or without the neighborhood kids on its grounds.
This Seven Up game was one of her favorites to play by herself. Introvert that she was even back then, there was something about the rhythmic ping of the ball against the wall and off the ground that was soothing. Everyone needs time to themselves, don’t they? As she repeated the words over and over, her mind and body seemed to go into a rhythmic trance, the bouncing ball matching her heartbeat.
There were already signs of the woman she would become. Focusing on each repetition, she upped the stakes by adding more difficult tricks, one time with her left foot raised, then with one arm behind her back, twirling around, even with her eyes closed, although that one was difficult to master. Pursuing excellence, one bounce at a time.

The sights we see when looking back are amazing, aren’t they. We can see how each piece fits the puzzle so snugly.
Try looking forward with the same effect. Doesn’t work that way, does it?
Nice little piece of creative writing.
Powerfully written, Kim! I can hear that ball bounce and can remember sounds of solitude being not too much unlike this little girl.
