This week’s exercise for writing memoir is all about coffee and you could win a copy of Natalie Goldberg’s book Old Friend from Far Away.

Being from Canada, I grew up drinking tea. When I started working, we used to go to a little coffee shop in an office building across the street and the smell of “good” coffee gradually worked its way into my being. I had to try it and it was sooooo good. For me, it will always be the best coffee I have ever tasted and I really looked forward to my morning coffee break. Today, I drink tea during the week and “good” coffee on the weekends with my husband.

I don’t know about you, but the phrase “Come for coffee” has a lot of meaning in my world. Maybe it’s a midwest U.S. thing, but this invitation means that someone wants to spend time with you. It’s all about taking a break and enjoying relationships.

Tell us about your coffee experience. How did you start drinking it? Where and when do you drink it now? Tell us about the smell, what you put in it, the cup you drink it in. If you don’t drink coffee, tell us why. Do you drink tea instead? If you stopped drinking coffee, tell us about that experience.

Goldberg says, “A whole world exists in coffee. Glean those details. Everything you know about coffee. Go.”
