Of all the activities from my youth, ice skating is the one I remember most fondly. My friends and I would hit the rink, a pond, or even a patch of ice in a field every chance we got.

Although my love for the freedom was generated because of a local IHL franchise, there was much more for me; for many of the same reasons you enjoyed skating, but mostly freedom.

At the rinks, my friends would be off goofing around, or hitting on the ice princesses, while I was off skating on my own. We would hit the same rinks, see the same people, but I avoided getting to know them.

My friends were enough, and sometimes too much.

Kim, you writing is incredible. The voice so serene.

Thanks, Alex. Your encouragement means a lot. Who knew you were a rink rat too.

Lovely story, Kim! I can see you out there on the ice being free. Escape, sounds so familiar. Skating wasn’t where I found mine, too clumsy. The escape I understand, though. Aren’t we blessed that we found ways to get away from the circumstances that we knew weren’t good for us? A form of inner survival, perhaps.

One of my cousins was a serious skater when she was growing up — off to the rink at 5:00 AM. I was on the ice myself only a few times, but curiously one of my first serious fictional characters was – is – a skater. I guess that makes me a vicarious skater. Very descriptive piece.

Ice skating is something I have not tried. I always wanted to but have never had the chance. But, this story may just inspire to try this year. How many bones could break at once?…lol
